Chapter 9

Sheena didn’t take long. While she was gone, I had time to dwell on what had happened with Gina. My chest was tight with regret for the way I’d hurt her. I never imagined I would become attached to her at an emotional level. She’d been the focus of my mission to carry out my boss’s order, nothing more. But spending the night with her, and then having sex in the back of her car had endeared her to me. And when I sabotaged her work, only to discover soon after I was working for the wrong side, it had crushed me. The more I ached to make amends, the more I realized how much I cared for her. And now she was gone. She’d dismissed me. Sure, I still had a job, but not by her side.

I sighed. She would have found out about my deception sooner or later, I knew. But ‘sooner’ had come along at the worst possible time.

Voices echoed in the corridor a moment before Sheena entered. My spare laptop was cradled under her arm.

“Who was that?” I nodded toward the door.

“Your guard, babe.”

“I have a guard?”

She rolled her eyes. “Of course you have a guard. Weren’t you paying attention to the whole ‘lethal injection and magnesium bomb’ episode.” She tapped my nose with a forefinger. “Someone is trying to kill you. We’re not going to let that happen.” I was startled when she kissed me again.

“Mmf?” I asked.

“Mmf mm mmf,” she replied.

“Mm.”

“Mm-hmm?” she asked.

“Mm-hmm…” The laptop was laid on the bed as Sheena sat beside me. Her arms slid round my neck, careful to avoid my shoulder. My hands found her waist and memories of our late-night tryst in Gina’s car came flooding back. The heat from her body, the smell of her perfume, the softness of her lips, they all warmed my senses until my head began to swim.

“Uh-uh, too much too soon,” Sheena said. She pulled back, leaving me kissing empty air. I was dizzy with happiness, or was it blood loss? Sheena glanced at the plasma drip, which I hadn’t even noticed.

“I was enjoying that,” I complained.

“You’re still on the ‘poorly’ list, babe. And besides…” she jerked her thumb back over her shoulder. “There’s a guard right outside the door.”

“Tell her to ignore any groaning,” I suggested. “Or better still, she could come in and watch, to make sure I’m in safe hands.” I lifted Sheena’s hands and placed them on my sheet-covered thighs.

“He might enjoy doing that,” Sheena grinned.

“Oh. It’s a guy.” I’d no idea why I’d thought I was guarded by a woman. Gender assumption, I suppose.

“You have a problem with guys?” Sheena asked, grinning. A moment later she sobered. “Oh, you’re gay, aren’t you?”

“Not by choice.” I squeezed her hands again. She tried to move them off my legs but I held them in place.

“Um… explain please? Sheena confused.”

“I was married… once. But he was killed. It broke my heart so badly, I’ve never gone near another man since.
